John Huss, Bohemian Martyer, eminent reformer died at the stake in Constance, Germany on his 42nd birthday. He did for believing the scriptures to be an infallable authority and the supreme standard of conduct. At the last moment, the Duke of Davaria urged Huss to recant, only to recieve the heroic reply:
“What I taught with my lips, I now seal with my blood”.
John King was seized along with seventeen others. Taken to Edinburgh for trial, they were condemned and executed. Their heads and right hands were nailed to the Netherbow Port. After his lengthy testimony, with its firm and faithful denial of any rebellion and it’s clear witness to the faith, Kings last words before he died were;
“Now I bid farewell to all my friends and dear relations; farewell my poor wife and child, whom I leave on the good hand of Him who is better than seven husbands, and will be ‘a father to the fatherless’. Farewell all creature comforts, and welcome everlasting life, everlasting glory, everlasting love, and everlasting praise. ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me”
